This is one of four posters I created for my final thesis at New Design School. With each of these posters, I felt that the original theatrical posters didn't fit the mood, message, or energy of the films. My goal was to represent the films more accurately. The major obstacle was the fact that there were little or no adequate screen captures from the films available to me. My solution was to take either a stylized illustrative or typographical approach.

"The Gift" is centered around Annie Wilson (Cate Blanchett) who is able to make a modest living as a psychic in the town of Brixton, Georgia. The story is supposedly based on the psychic experiences of the mother of the film’s screenwriter, Billy Bob Thornton. Annie finds herself caught up in the investigation of the murder of a local woman and the difficult lives of others in the community she tries to help with her gift. The film has a haunting ethereal quality to it and uses minimal special effects for the most part. Sam Raimi, the director said that whether or not the audience believed in psychic phenomena he wanted them to believe that Annie did have this ability.

With this poster I wanted to suggested the other worldliness of the film without doing anything overtly fantastical or sensational. Blanchett inhabits the lead character well and I felt that capturing her expression from a key dream sequence in the film would further convey the atmosphere of "The Gift".
